Revitalizing Savannah’s History: Meredith Stone and the Carnegie Library Transformation

At Vantosh Commercial Group, we don’t just sell and lease property—we are deeply invested in the people and the history that make Savannah’s neighborhoods thrive. Today, we are incredibly proud to spotlight one of our own agents, Meredith Stone, for her extraordinary work as a Project Manager with GMSHAY on the historic renovation of the Carnegie Library.

A Landmark Reimagined: The Carnegie Library Project

The Carnegie Library has long stood as a pillar of the Dixon Park neighborhood. Originally requested by leaders within Savannah’s African-American community during a time of limited empowerment, the building is what Meredith calls a “minor miracle”.

The latest transformation, led by GMSHAY, shifts the library from a circulating collection to a Special Collections Library. It will now serve as a sanctuary for:

  • Black Savannian History: Preserving the stories and papers of notable local figures.
  • Gullah Geechee Culture: A dedicated space to explore and understand this unique coastal heritage.
  • Oral Histories: Capturing the lived experiences of the community that conventional history books often miss.

Meredith Stone: Designing for Resilience and Roots

For Meredith, this project is deeply personal. Her grandparents were prominent Savannah leaders, and her father grew up walking to this very library to check out books. Key design elements she spearheaded include:

  • “Pillars of Success”: Using deep, rich colors for columns to symbolize the strength of the community.
  • Brighter Horizons: New, bright ceilings and updated lighting to create a welcoming, uplifting atmosphere.
  • Historical Resilience: Ensuring the 100-year-old building is resilient enough to serve the community for another century.
